Later, when the victim raised an alarm, the accused threw her into a well near the house. After she was rescued from the well, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors referred her to Sawai Man Singh government hospital in Jaipur for further treatment, Sharma said. Rajasthan HC stays arrest of JLF organiser

Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) organisers on Tuesday got interim relief from Rajasthan High Court which stayed the arrest of the event producer Sanjoy Roy in connection with author Ashis Nandy’s controversial remarks regarding Dalits. As per the court’s directive, the police will have to serve a notice seven days in advance before the arrest of Roy in the case. The court also stayed the orders of Jaipur police directing Roy and executive producer Sheuli Sethi to not leave the city till investigation in the case is over.
However, it directed them to cooperate with the police in the investigation. The petition was filed on Monday in Jaipur bench of the High Court seeking quashing of the FIR which was lodged last week by a local activist in connection with remarks of sociologist Ashis Nandy against ST, SC and OBC communities. Roy along with Nandy is named in the FIR filed under section 506 of IPC (criminal intimidation) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes(Prevention of Atrocities) Act with Ashok Nagar police station last week.

Rajasthan High Court stays Gujjar reservation of 5% under SBC

Rajasthan High Court stays Gujjar reservation of 5% under the Special Backward Classes (SBC) category  till February 19 in state services and educational institutions. The state government had decided on November 29 last year to award five per cent reservation to Gujjars, Raika, Banjaaras, Gadiyalohar and Gadariya communities as special backward class, taking the total reservation in the state to 54 percent. The PIL that challenged the decision of state government to implement the reservation, which was to come into effect from January 30, was filed by one Mukesh Solanki.
Taking cognizance of the letter written by some students, the division bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Bhalla and Justice M N Bhandari observed that the reservation provided to Gujjars and economically weaker sections by the state government does not comply with the legal provisions given the Supreme Court order on it. The court has sought reply from the government in this regard within 15-days. It is to be noted that the state government had passed a bill providing for 5 percent and 14 percent reservation for Gujjars and economically weaker sections.

Nightclub fire kills 245 in Brazil

A fire in a nightclub killed about 245 people in southern Brazil on Sunday when a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze and fleeing partygoers stampeded toward blocked and overcrowded exits in the ensuing panic, officials said. The blaze in the university town of Santa Maria was started by a band member or someone from its production team igniting a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling, said Luiza Sousa, a civil police official. The fire spread "in seconds," she said. Local fire officials said at least one exit was locked and that bouncers, who at first thought those fleeing were trying to skip out on bar tabs, initially blocked patrons from leaving. The security staff relented only when they saw flames engulfing the ceiling. The vast majority of the victims, most of them university students, died from asphyxiation, officials said. Others were crushed in the stampede.
The newspaper Diario de Santa Maria reported that the fire started at around 2 a.m. at the Kiss nightclub in the city at the southern tip of Brazil, near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay. Rodrigo Moura, whom the paper identified as a security guard at the club, said it was at its maximum capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000, and partygoers were pushing and shoving to escape.

FIR against Ashis Nandy for 'casteist' comment

Jaipur Literature festival is continue to be part of Controversies for consecutive second year by casteist comment by author, sociologist and political critic Ashis Nandy after previous years controversies by Salman Rushdie. Ashis Nandy on Saturday kicked up a storm with his comments that people from OBC, SC and ST communities were the ‘most corrupt’, remarks that came under all round attack.  At a panel discussion at the festival, Nandy said, "Most corrupt people come from OBC, SC and ST communities". Journalist Ashutosh, who was among the panelists, and most members from the audience took strong exception to the statement. Hours after Nandy made the remarks at the on-going Jaipur Literature Festival, an FIR was lodged with the police against him in Jaipur under Section 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes(Prevention of Atrocities) Act. OBC, SC, ST most corrupt says Ashis Nandy

Noted author, sociologist and political critic Ashis Nandy on Saturday kicked up a storm with his comments that people from OBC, SC and ST communities were the ‘most corrupt’, remarks that came under all round attack.  At a panel discussion at the festival, Nandy said, "Most corrupt people come from OBC, SC and ST communities". Journalist Ashutosh, who was among the panelists, and most members from the audience took strong exception to the statement. "This is the most bizarre statement I have heard. The Brahmins and the upper cast can do away with all the corruption but when a low caste person emulates the same thing it becomes so wrong. Such statement is not right," he said.
Addressing a press conference in the evening, Nandy told reporters he was misunderstood. "As should be clear, there was neither any intention nor any attempt to hurt any community," he said. Roy said: "They have clarified their position and have understood that it was a misunderstanding. Controversies are easily created. Please be responsible." However, the BSP did not accept the clarification. Talking to media persons in Delhi, Mayawati said Nandy's comments were wrong, baseless and unfortunate. "Our party demands that the Rajasthan government should register a case and he should be sent to jail," she said.

Rajnath Singh elected New BJP president

Rajnath Singh has been elected unopposed as the new president of the BJP. The 61-year-old will now lead the party as it battles the Congress in next year's general election. His term will end in 2015. 61-year-old Singh from Uttar Pradesh, who takes over from Nitin Gadkari, returns to the political terrain in which the low-profile, soft-spoken and articulate leader found himself about six years ago when he was chosen by the saffron party to head it. General elections is due in May 2014. Singhs dramatic elevation to the top party post caps a period of big political churnings within BJP divided on re-electing Gadkari as president for a second time. It was Singh who had handed over the baton to Gadkari in December 2009.
But in a sudden and dramatic last-minute twist, Gadkari, facing allegations of dubious funding of his company, was last night forced out of the race for BJP President's post for a second term and Rajnath emerged the consensus choice. The party probably had little choice except to fall back on Singhs non-controversial image and a high degree of acceptability among rival groups in the organization. Singh has again been brought back by the party as chief just three days after the Congress elevated AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi as Vice President. How Singh will reshape the BJP to counter Congress charm offensive remains to be seen though he has often lauded BJPs democratic strength which has enabled a "commoner" like him to lead the party.

The committee, set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC), has sought opinion of vice chancellors of all universities in the country before implementation the recommendations. The expert Committee has recommended that, "a student enrolled in a degree programme under regular mode may be allowed to pursue a maximum of one additional degree programme simultaneously under open/distance mode from the same or a different university. However, two degree programmes under regular mode may not be allowed simultaneously as it may create logistic, administrative and academic problems." The panel has also recommended that "a student pursuing a degree programme under regular mode may be allowed to pursue a maximum of one certificate/diploma/advanced diploma/PG diploma programme simultaneously either in regular or open and distance mode in the same university or from other institutions."
