India-born Scot John Shepherd- Barron, the man who invented the ATM, has died after a short illness, aged 84. He is survived by his wife, three sons and six grandchildren. Barron, who had been living in Portmahomack in Ross-shire, died peacefully at Inverness's Raigmore Hospital in northern Scotland on Saturday, funeral director Alasdair Rhind told the media. The businessman, who worked for the printing firm De La Rue Instruments at the time, came up with the concept of a self-service cash dispenser in 1965 while lying in a bath after getting to his bank too late to withdraw money. "It struck me there must be a way I could get my own money, anywhere in the world or the UK. I hit upon the idea of a chocolate bar dispenser, but replacing chocolate with cash," Barron had said in an interview in 2007. The first automated teller machine was installed at a bank in London in 1967. And, Reg Varney, one of the stars of popular TV show 'On the Buses', became the first person to withdraw cash. The first ATM was operated by inserting a special cheque that was matched against a PIN number, and paved the way for machines using plastic cards. There are now nearly two million machines worldwide.

Somdev Devvarman qualifies for French Open

Somdev Devvarman became the first Indian in 13 years to qualify for the men's singles event of the French Open after scoring a 6-4 6-1 win over Adrian Mannarino in Paris on Friday. It took sixth seed Somdev one hour and 25 minutes to quell the challenge of his French rival in the third and final round and seal one of the 16 main draw spots up for grab. Leander Paes was the last Indian to play in men's singles event of the French Open in 1997 when he made the second round of the clay court Grand Slam. This is for the second time that Somdev has qualified for the men's singles of a Grand Slam tournament. He first played in a tennis Major at the US Open last year and had reached second round.
Somdev's victory means India will not go unrepresented in the singles event of the second Grand Slam of the year since Sania Mirza is giving a miss to women's singles event. Last year, Somdev had stumbled on the last hurdle here as he had lost the final round. Somdev had to work hard to take first set from Mannarino, ranked 170 spots below him at 289, as the local fought tooth and nail.

Rajasthan govt seize Lakshmi Vilas Hotel Jaipur

Lakshmi Vilas Heritage Hotel Jaipur has been seized by the state government. As per Rajasthan High Court order, Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) on Thursday evicted the occupants of the heritage property with 40 palatial rooms and put its own seal on it. The adjoining prime property Kanak Bhawan, too has been seized. Surrounded by rolling meadows, long walking/jogging tracks, a golf course, a football ground and a polo ground, the Lakshmi Vilas was a popular tourist destination ever since it was converted into a heritage hotel in the early seventies.
In 1986, Bhawani Singh sold both — Lakshmi Vilas as well as Kanak Bhawan. Till Thursday, Laxmi Vilas was with Madan Lal Sharma and Ram Das Atar whereas Kanak Bhawan belonged to H C Gupta. The three families were using parts of the properties for residential purpose also. However, JDA had challenged sale of the two properties. Under Rajasthan State Land Acquisition Act, the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT), a wing of the state government, had in 1973 acquired 322-bigha land in Rambagh Complex for public utility. As per UIT claim, the above two structures were part of the “acquired” 322-bigha land. The JDA action on Thursday came in response to the explanation sought by a division bench of the Rajasthan High Court in Jaipur on Wednesday as to why the previous court order was not complied with. The court had on May 10 ordered removal of “encroachment” on properties on the Rambagh Complex premises. The court had also asked the government to take possession of Kanak Bhawan and Lakshmi Vilas Hotel, which are also on Rambagh Complex premises.

Rajasthan-Gujarat Oil pipeline completed

Cairn India, the firm that gave the nation its largest on-land oil discovery, has completed a pipeline from the Thar desserts of Rajasthan to the Gujarat coast for transporting crude oil. "The (590-km) pipeline from the Mangala (oil fields) in Rajasthan to Salaya in Gujarat is now complete," Cairn Energy, the parent firm of the Bombay Stock Exchange-listed Cairn India, said on Thursday. Cairn, which currently trucks crude oil produced from the the Barmer district in Rajasthan to refiners like Reliance Industries and Mangalore Refinery, will be able to sell oil to Indian Oil and Essar Oil once the pipeline becomes operational. The pipeline will help ramp up production from Mangala field to 125,000 barrels per day in second half of 2010 from 60,000 bpd currently, it said, adding that spur lines to refineries have been completed.
"Crude oil continues to be evacuated via road trucks to the Gujarat coast for onward transport to MRPL and Reliance refineries, using heated crude oil tankers," it said. Cairn said Processing Trains One and Two at the Mangala Processing Terminal (MPT) are operational and Train Three is due for completion by the end of second quarter of 2010. "The MPT is designed to process crude from the Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwariya (MBA) fields and, when complete, will have initial capacity to handle 205,000 bopd of crude with scope for further expansion," the statement said. Four MPT Processing Trains will enable Cairn to produce and process the current approved peak plateau production of 175,000 bpd.

Cyclone alert in AP, WB and Orissa

With cyclone Laila nearing landfall, over 40,000 people were evacuated from low- lying areas of Andhra Pradesh even as authorities in West Bengal and Orissa on Thursday issued alerts to people in coastal regions and asked fishermen not to venture into Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said though the cyclone has weakened, the danger is not over yet as there were signs of it re-emerging in northern Bay of Bengal over the weekend. "After landfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh near Bapatla, the cyclone track shows that it will move along coastal Andhra and re-emerge in north Bay," IMD Director General Ajit Tyagi told reporters in New Delhi. He said there were chances of Laila intensifying further and moving towards north Andhra Pradesh, south Orissa and then towards Bangladesh. Tyagi rejected suggestions of the system intensifying into a super cyclone similar to the one that struck Orissa in 1999 wreaking havoc.
Over 40,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh as there was a possibility of Laila triggering gales with speeds of over 115 kmph inflincting damage, a senior official of the Disaster Management Department said in Hyderabad. Alerts were issued in six coastal districts of West Bengal and people asked to take precautionary measures in places like North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah and Hoogly. Under its influnce, heavy rain has been forecast in the coastal areas from tomorrow evening and fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea, West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said.

LK Advani get relief in Babri Masjid demolition case

In a major relief to L K Advani and 20 others in the Babri Masjid demolition case, the Allahabad High Court has rejected CBI's petition to revive criminal conspiracy charges against them. However, the case against them for inflammatory and provocative speeches will continue at Rae Bareli. In his 44-page judgement, Justice Alok Kumar Singh of the Lucknow bench of the High Court said there was no merit in CBI's revision petition challenging the 4th May 2001 order of the special court which directed dropping of criminal conspiracy charge against BJP leaders Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, besides Uma Bharti, former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh and others.
There are two sets of cases -- one against Advani and others who were on the dias at Ram Katha Kunj in Ayodhya on December six, 1992 when the Babri Masjid was demolished. He said Advani and 20 others were present on the dias at Ram Katha Kunj on the first floor of the building, "holding meeting, giving speeches and raising slogans." All the 21 were charged under sections 153A IPC (promoting enemity betwen classes), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 505 (false statements, rumours etc circulated with the intent to cause mutiny or disturb public peace). NHRC issues notice on renaming Rajasthan village

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Union Home Secretary in a case regarding renaming of a village in Dausa district of Rajasthan. NHRC spokesperson Jaimini Kumar Srivastava today said the Ministry has been directed to respond within six weeks. The name of 'Kuwan Ka Vas' village in Dausa was changed by a land record keeper in 1987 to 'Chamaron Ka Vas' literally meaning 'residence of the backwards'. The village is inhabited by the Berwa community. ''In a democratic country like India, whose Constitution clearly prohibits any discrimination on the basis of castes and religion, the name of the village Chamaron Ka Vas constitutes a criminal offence,'' Mr Srivastava said.
The Commission's intervention was sought in 2006 and a notice was issued to State Chief Secretary calling for a report within eight weeks. It took about two years for the government to respond and the name 'Kushalpura' was suggested, he said. The Commission asked villagers for their comments and ordered the closure of the case in 2008 when no comments were received. The NHRC was then told by a villager in the same year that the MHA told the Rajasthan government that Kushalpura was not acceptable to the Railway Ministry as there was already a transit railway station 'Kushalpura Halt' which could create confusion. A list of alternate names was forwarded to the MHA by the state government for approval, but there was no response yet. The MHA Joint Secretary informed NHRC earlier this year that the proposal of restoring the name 'Kuwan Ka Vas' was under examination with the Ministry.

Bank of Rajasthan to merge with ICICI Bank

Bank of Rajasthan (BoR), has decided to merge the old private sector bank with the country’s second-largest lender, ICICI Bank. This would be the third acquisition by ICICI Bank in the last decade. Both the bank boards have given an in-principle nod to the merger. ICICI Bank has started a due diligence exercise on BoR from Tuesday. ICICI Bank MD & CEO Chanda Kochhar said, “We have reached an indicative pricing with the promoters on a swap ratio of 25:118. (A BoR shareholder will receive 25 ICICI shares for every 118 BoR shares held.) This is, however, subject to due diligence. Our understanding of the strategic value is that it would have taken us three years to build the current account and savings account relationships. Also, the deal prices the market capitalisation per branch in the range of around Rs 6.5 crore, which is similar to other old private sector banks.”
In the case of HDFC Bank, which acquired Centurion Bank of Punjab, the price per branch was around Rs 26 crore. “It was a brief board meeting. An in-principle approval has been taken to amalgamate the bank with ICICI Bank. The majority shareholder is looking at swapping his official shareholding of 28.60% with ICICI Bank shares. Other details on valuation and share swap will be decided on May 24,” said BoR MD & CEO G Padmanabhan. The Tayals, who acquired BoR a decade ago in a messy transaction, are believed to be under pressure to sell the old private bank amid regulatory action by Sebi and RBI. Mr Padmanabhan was appointed by RBI, which recently slapped a fine on BoR for a string of violations including deletion of records in the IT system, shady property deals and irregularities in a particular corporate group account.

Chidambaram offer fresh talk with Naxals

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday made a fresh offer to hold talks with Naxals if they "suspend" violence even for just 72 hours, a day after Maoists unleashed another attack in Chattisgarh. "Maoists should say 'We will abjure violence. We will suspend violence and actually suspend violence for 72 hours'. We will get the Chief Ministers on board. We will respond. We will fix a date, time and place for talks and let the Maoists come for the talks on anything they wish to talk," Chidambaram told a news channel. Maoists blew up a bus killing at least 36 people near Dantewada on Monday.
Chidambaram said CPI(Maoist) never responded "seriously" to the offer of talks. "They are indulging in gimmickery I am afraid media plays up that gimmick," he said. Asked whether government forces will also halt all operations against them during the period of ceasefire, the Home Minister responded, "That goes without saying". Chidambaram said "if they observe complete suspension of violence for just 72 hours, it goes without saying that police will not take any action against any CPI(Maoist) activist, hideouts or camps." He said complete suspension means there should not be any attack on infrastructure, any landmine blast or any targetting of telephone towers. On the issue of Hindu extremists, the Home Minister said there are evidence pointing to various groups which are supported by extreme right Hindu fundamentalist group. "Don't call Hindu terrorist. A terrorist is a terrorist. Except in this case, the terrorist subscribe to extreme funamentalist Hindu philosophy. We feel that there are evidence to the Ajmer Blast, Mecca Masjid Blast and investigating agencies are closely following the trail that we have stumbled upon or discovered," he said.

England win ICC T20 World cup Title

It was a momentous day for the history of England cricket as they clinched their first ever major ICC tournament title, that is, the World T20 Champions by defeating age-old rivals Australia by 7 wickets. It was not only a victory for England, but also a moment of pride as the creators of the game finally have a major trophy on their shelf. England ruled the battleground since the very beginning. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England revived the Ashes-rivalry in the shortest format as well as they took of to a brilliant start against the Aussies, reducing them to 8/3 within the first three overs itself. Ryan Sidebottom became the star for England as he first dismissed opener Shane Watson (2) and Brad Haddin (1) in the first and third over respectively. Standing at a rickety position, Michael Clarke and David Hussey tried to elevate Australia’s run-rate but failed miserably as England bowlers maintained a tight grip on their opponents. In the 10th over, Australia received another major blow as Paul Collingwood took a brilliant catch off Swann’s delivery to dismiss Clarke for 27 runs. The (Cameron) ‘White’ charm to did not last long for Australia as he too lost his wicket to Stuart Broad who got him caught by Luke Wright.
However, the Hussey brothers, David and Michael, kept on struggling till the very end. David added 59 runs, his third T20 International half-century, to finally conclude Australia’s innings at 147/6. A target of 148 seemed meager enough for England to chase as the only ‘setback’, so as to say, for them was the initial wicket of opener Michael Lumb (2). Thereafter, there was no looking back for England as a tremendous 111-run partnership between Kevin Pietersen (47) and Craig Kieswetter (56) completed half the job for their team. Later skipper Collingwood (12) and Eoin Morgan (15) completed the final formalities to hand over the most-awaited victory to their nation.

India share Azlan Shah trophy 2010 with South Korea

Defending champions India and South Korea were on Sunday declared joint winners of the Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament as the summit clash between the two teams was called off due to rain in Ipoh, Malaysia. The final match was abandoned after six minutes of play as the heavy showers lashed the turf. India had lost only one match, against Malaysia, en route to final. This is the first time in the history of the tournament, which began in 1983, that there have been joint winners. Indian defender Sardar Singh was adjuged the best player of the tournament.
The Indian team management, when called by the FIH Tournament Director Paul Richards, expressed the desire to be given the winners trophy since they had topped the seven team round-robin league with 13 points as well as having beaten the Koreans 3-2 at that stage. However, it was decided to give the winners cup to both the teams which gave India their fifth title and the Koreans grabbed their second. India had made six appearances in the final of the tournament and ended on the victorious side on four occasions in 1985, 1991, 1995 and 2009. They had lost the title clash of the 2008 event to Argentina via golden goal.

Rajasthan govt plan solar water pump projet worth 515 Crore

Rajasthan government is planning to come up with a Rs. 515 crore solar water pump project to cut down on its power expenses. It is likely to install 10,000 solar water pumps in the first phase to save nine crore units per annum. The state government has sent a proposal to the central government for its approval under the National Agriculture Development Scheme. Rajasthan agriculture minister Harjiram Burdak said that the state government is in talks with the central government for rolling out this project. “We are waiting for centre’s nod. We will implement it in phases,” he said. The state government has already invited expressions of interest from solar pump set manufacturers. Around 10 manufacturers have shown interest in supplying solar pump sets in the rural areas.
“The solar pump sets are attached to the water source. Solar panel of the pump converts the solar energy into electrical power, which runs the motor to pump water. A five HP solar water pump set will save 25 units of power every day,” an agriculture department official said. Under this project, farmers in water-scarce areas will be asked to install solar water pump for irrigation. There are two types of pumps. The cost of 2-HP solar water pump is Rs. 4 lakh while a 5-HP pump costs Rs. 10 lakh. “Farmers will get 80 percent subsidy on the cost of the pump while the state government will provide them loan on remaining amount at the interest rate of 5 per cent,” he said.

Cairn India's Rajasthan oil to flow Gujarat this week

Cairn India will start pumping crude from its Rajasthan fields by the end of this week, bringing down operational costs by $3-4 per barrel. The company has completed the construction of the 590km heated pipeline — the longest in the world — connecting Barmer in Rajasthan with Salaya in Gujarat. Cairn needs to pour in at least one million barrels to ensure that it flows out at the delivery point in Gujarat. It will take about a month before the company starts selling to domestic refineries.
The British explorer has contracted to sell up to 143,000 barrels oil per day (bpd) to Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), Indian Oil Corporation, Reliance Industries (RIL) and Essar. The company is ramping up production from the Rajasthan fields to 125,000bpd by June from 30,000bpd. It will go up to 175,000bpd by the end of next year. The Rajasthan block, which comprises Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwariya fields, is 70 per cent owned by Cairn. ONGC owns the rest. At present, Cairn transports crude from Mangala to the Kandla port by tankers for shipment to MRPL and RIL. The pipeline, once fully operational, will reduce the transportation cost to $1 per barrel from $6-7 per barrel. Overall operational cost will be $5.3 a barrel. Cairn and ONGC have spent $1billion, or Rs 4,450 crore, to build the pipeline that runs about nine feet beneath the ground.

Virendra Sehwag may replace Dhoni in ODI & T20 Format

Indian caption Mr. Cool who win the inaugural T20 World Cup title and the No 1 ranking in Tests. But Mahendra Singh Dhoni may be about to suffer the first major setback of his career. With India failing to win a single Super 8 match in two straight T20 World Cups, there is talk of replacing Dhoni with Virendra Sehwag as captain in both one-dayers and T20. It is possible that India will have a new captain as early as next month when the selectors name the squad for Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. While Sehwag seems the front-runner for the top job, Dhoni will continue to lead the team in Tests, where India is No 1 in ICC rankings. There is apparently a section within the BCCI, which wants Dhoni to be retained even as ODI and T20 skipper due to his trackrecord, but the selectors seem to be ready to seek a change of guard.
While Virender Sehwag’s own captaincy record isn’t exactly awe-inspiring. In fact, Sehwag has even given up the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils, saying he prefers to enjoy the game and concentrate on his batting. so we may see some more drama here.

No amendment in Hindu Marriage Act - Moily

Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily on Tuesday ruled out amending the Hindu Marriage Act in order to accommodate the Khap Panchayat's demands. "We have suggested to amend the simple marriage act, not the Hindu Marriage Act,” he added. Moily comment comes just a day after Congress MP and industrialist Navin Jindal said that he had never said anything to support the honour killings committed by the Khap Panchayats. Earlier, Jindal has reportedly come out in support of the Haryana Khap Panchayats. It has been reported that Jindal, who is currently abroad, sent a letter to the Khap Panchayats on Sunday affirming his support to them on the issue.
The self-styled Khap Panchayats gathered in Kurukshetra on April 13 and demanded a ban on marriages within the same ''gotra'' or sub caste. They also protested against a Karnal Sessions Court verdict that awarded death sentences to five accused and a life-term to the leader of a Khap Panchayat for the murder of a newly-married couple. Representatives of at least 20 Khap Panchayats from Haryana challenged the court ruling and said they would raise money to help the killers of the newly married couple. They said they wanted the ''Hindu Marriage Act'' to be amended, to include a law that bans marriages within same sub caste or the same village.

India crashed out of T20 World cup

India’s T20 World Cup campaign virtually ended on Sunday after it lost to West Indies by 14 runs in a crucial Group F Super Eight encounter. West Indies, meanwhile, stayed in contention for a semi-final berth. West Indies ruled the entire match since the very beginning. After being asked to bat first by Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the home team started their innings on a very steady note. It was Chris Gayle and his boisterous 97 runs that helped his team post a competitive 169/6 against India. Gayle showed no signs of exhaustion in the entire first innings as he, along with his opening partner Shivnarine Chanderpaul, gave a very stable start to their team’s batting campaign by making sure that they did not lose wickets early and kept adding runs through boundaries time and again. The modest show turned pompous in the latter overs as Gayle hit some almighty skiers to almost single-handedly help West Indies post a cutthroat 169.
Starting on a disastrous note, India lost both their opening batsmen very cheaply within the first five overs itself; while Murali Vijay (7) lost his wicket in the fourth over, Gautam Gambhir got out in the next for 15 runs. India never really revived from these early losses as there was no stopping to their loss of wickets later on. The wickets of Rohit Sharma (5), Suresh Raina (32) and Yuvraj Singh (12) fell like a pack of cards. Later, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (29), Yusuf Pathan (17) and Harbhajan Singh (14) made some significant contributions with their occasional boundaries, but they too could not last long. The Indian innings wrapped up on 155 all out.
