Rajasthan royals may get IPL 4 Ticket, HC put stay for 6 weeks

In a major relief to the owners of the Rajasthan Royals, the contract termination of the former franchise from the IPL has been stayed for six weeks on Tuesday by the sole arbitrator Justice B N Srikrishna. BCCI on October 20 terminated the contracts of the two IPL franchisees, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, from the IPL over the issue of ownership patterns. Unhappy with the decision, the owner of the Royals decided to move the Bombay High Court where the former IPL franchise and the BCCI had agreed to resolve their dispute over the former IPL franchisee`s contract termination through an arbitrator.
"As I always said, right from day 1, with regard to Rajasthan team, the bid was given by a different bidder, agreement was entered into a different company. The share holding patterns were different. The shares were transferred thereafter to different people without the permission of the Governing Council," Manohar added. However reports suggested that Modi's alleged proxy stakes in the two teams were amongst the reasons. Here's how the dots connect up in the Rajasthan team - Lalit Modi's sister-in law is married to Suresh Chellaram, the majority stake holder of the team. While with Kings XI, Modi was said to have favoured his step-son-in-law Gaurav Burman's company to get the mobile and internet rights of IPL. Gaurav's brother Mohit is a part owner of Kings XI Punjab.

2G Scam: 119 Telecom companies to get Notice from DoT

Facing allegations of massive financial irregularities in 2G spectrum allocation, the govt has said show-cause notices will be issued to 119 licencees for suppressing facts and also for missing roll-out obligations as per the terms and conditions of licence. ".we believe that some of the companies might have suppressed facts, might have got an undue advantage in accessing licences," Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters in New Delhi on Monday. Asked about the revenue loss to the exchequer by allotting spectrum at 2001 prices, as pointed out by the CAG, the Minister said, "The CAG has stated this. This is something which the Ministry will decide and we will apply our mind individually to each case."
The notices will be issued to 119 licencees of which 81 fall under both categories of ineligibility to get licences and 38 for not meeting roll-out obligations alone as spelt out in the licences, Sibal said. He, however, declined to name the companies which would be issued show cause notices. Sources said that among the new operators, the companies are Uninor, S Tel, Loop Telecom and Videocon. The licencess would be given 60 days time to respond to show cause notices, Sibal said, adding each case would be dealt with separately. "After studying their response, a decision will be taken on whether these (licences) need to be cancelled or a penalty should be imposed," the minister said. The ministry will start issuing the notices in next three-four days, senior DoT officials said adding the Minister has cleared the file.

Parliament adjourned for contineous 12th day

For the 12th straight working day, both the houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Monday without conducting any bussiness as the members persisted with their demand for a Joint Parliamentary probe into the 2G spectrum allocation. The government's every effort to break the logjam has yielded no result and question hours in both houses of parliament were derailed again with an unrelenting opposition persisting with its demand that a parliamentary panel probe the controversial second generation telephony spectrum allocation in 2008.
A thinly-attended Lok Sabha saw members thumping their desks after Speaker Meira Kumar lauded the performance of Indian sportspersons in the recently concluded Asian Games. But as soon as the Speaker took up the Question Hour, member were in the well demanding a JPC probe into the allocation of 2G spectrum. They waved newspaper reports on various alleged scams. The speaker then adjourned the house till 12 noon. When the house resumed the sitting at noon, the sloganeering continued and deputy speaker Karia Munda ordered the adjournment of the Lok Sabha till Tuesday.

Governor Shivraj Patil on Sunday appointed 55-year-old Jodhpur-born and current vice-chancellor (V-C) of Bhavnagar University (Gujarat), Dr B L Sharma, as full-time V-C of the Rajasthan University (RU) for three years. Secretary, RU Teachers' Association (RUTA), Jayant Singh, expressed delight over Sharma's appointment. "We welcome the decision," he added. Singh clarified that it was not that they were hell bent on selection of someone from Rajasthan as V-C but they had pleaded that the state too has a rich pool of talent and they should also be considered for the top job.

The US has warned India and other key governments across the world about a new potentially embarrassing release of classified documents by the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks which may harm the American interests and create tension in its ties with its ''friends''. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. File photo"We have reached out to India to warn them about a possible release of documents," State Department Spokesman P J Crowley told. "We do not know precisely what WikiLeaks has or what it plans to do. We have made our position clear. These documents should not be released," Crowley said, ahead of the expected release by the website of millions of sensitive diplomatic cables.
It is not known yet what is contained in these documents about India-related issues.
The WikiLeaks has said there would be "seven times" as many secret documents as the 400,000 Iraq war logs it published last month. Besides Britain and India, the US has warned the governments of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Israel in advance of the release. IPL 4 players auction on 8 January 2011

The IPL player auction for the 2011 season will be held on January 8 and 9 in Mumbai, the league's governing council has announced. The tournament itself will feature eight teams, playing 60 matches, and run from April 8 to May 22. The tournament, which begins a week after the World Cup ends, will involve each of the eight sides playing playing 14 games, adding up to 56 matches, the same as in previous IPL editions. The top two from the league rounds will then contest a play-off match, with the winner qualifying for the "Grand Final." The teams that finish third and fourth in the league stage will contest the other play-off, and the winner of that game will play the defeated team from the first play-off to decide the second finalist.
The auction is likely to be on the scale of the first one, held in 2008, with teams starting largely from scratch, and will be held under rules framed in September. One difference will be the absence of "icon" players - originally, five franchises had one player each named as its icon. The auction was initially to have been held this month but uncertainty over the composition of the tournament - with two franchises expelled and a third, Kochi, in limbo - forced a postponement. The governing council, which met in Mumbai on Wednesday, was expected to have discussed the status of the Kochi franchise but Rajiv Shukla, a BCCI vice-president and council member, said it did not figure. He did, however, reiterate that the 2011 season would have eight participating teams.

Jaipur MP Mahesh Joshi has termed the state government’s beautification plans for the State Circle a “wasteful expenditure”. Opposing the government move to tamper with the Statute Circle, the Jaipur’s parliamentarian alleged that the city’s basic civic issues were being overlooked for lofty projects. “There are many issues that are more pressing than beautifying an already beautiful public place. Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister K Rosaiah has announced his resignation. The party in Andhra Pradesh has faced a public and massive attack from one of its own against the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi. Two forest guard suspended in Sariska case

Sariska Field Director and Chief Conservator of Forest K K Garg was transferred from his place to Kota in the aftermath of death of a tiger named ST-1. Besides Mr Garg, a forester and a forest guard, posted in the Taalvrikshya area of the sanctuary, have been placed under suspension, official sources said today. The tiger was translocated to Sariska from Ranthambhor about two years ago. Earlier, two officers of Forest Department were also suspended in the wake of death of a 5-year-old male tiger ST-1, which was found dead in suspicious circumstances in the Kankwadi block of forests along the Rajorgarh village on November 14 night. The feline was reportedly given poison probably by denizens of villages, situated in the sanctuary areas.
The death rendered a big set-back to efforts of revival of the tiger population which entirely was wiped out from the sanctuary by the poachers about six years ago. In a revival bid, two tigers and three tigresses were translocated from Ranthambhore during the past two years. Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh, who had visited Sariska last week, had held Forest Administration responsible for the death of the tiger.

Jamia Millia University honours Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of six millions Tibetans and a global icon of peace and inter-faith harmony, was Tuesday conferred an honorary doctorate by Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia, a government-funded central university with a 90-year-old rich history. The honour had the nod of the Indian government. The university vice chancellor, Najeeb Jung, awarded the degree to the Dalai Lama in the presence of Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and thousands of students and members of the faculty, besides diplomats and leading lights, at the university campus. "I feel highly honoured to get this degree from an Islamic university. One of my main concerns is religious harmony," the Dalai Lama said.
Addressing the students, the Dalai Lama gave the message of making the 21st century a century of peace. "The 20th century was a century of bloodshed, but nothing was achieved out of that bloodshed. The 21st Century must be a century of peace and you will shape it," he said adding that education should go along with morals and ethics to achieve this aim. Sibal congratulated the university for honouring the Dalai Lama in "keeping with its secular traditions". Emphasising on the value of higher education, Sibal said that the future of India depended on its education sector.

AIDS cases drop by 50% in India

India has shown a 50 percent drop in the number of new HIV infections in the last 10 years as the AIDS epidemic is beginning to reverse globally with a decline in the newly-infected HIV cases and AIDS-related deaths, says a United Nations report released Tuesday. The 2010 UNAIDS Report on the global AIDS epidemic shows about 33.3 million people were estimated to be living with HIV at the end on 2009 with 2.3 million living in India. An estimated 2.6 million people became newly infected with HIV in 2009, nearly 20 percent fewer than the 3.1 million people infected in 1999. In India, 120,000 people got infected in 2009. While 1.8 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses, nearly one-fifth lower than the 2.1 million people who died in 2004, about 170,000 people died in India.
"We are breaking the trajectory of the AIDS epidemic with bold actions and smart choices. India is doing quite well in HIV treatment. Investments in the AIDS response are paying off, but gains are fragile -- the challenge now is how we can all work to accelerate progress," said Charles Gilks, UNAIDS country coordinator India.

Sariska Field Director removed after death of tiger

Sariska Field Director and Chief Conservator of Forest K K Garg has been removed from the post in the aftermath of death of tiger ST-1 which was translocated to Sariska from Ranthambhor about two years ago. Mr Garg has been transferred as Chief Convervator of Forest in Kota. ''Tiger ST-1, a 5-year-old male, was found dead in suspicious circumstances in the Kankwadi block of forests along the Rajorgarh village on November 14 night. The feline was reportedly given poison probably by denizens of villages situated in the sanctuary areas.
The death rendered a big setback to efforts of revival of the tiger population which entirely was wiped out from the sanctuary by the poachers about six years ago. In the revival bid, two tigers and three tigresses were translocated from Ranthambhore during the past about two years. Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh who had visited Sariska last week had held Forest administration responsible for the death of the tiger. Two officials of the sanctuary had already been placed under suspension.

Cairn India forced to cap output from Rajasthan oilfield

Cairn India has been forced to cap oil production from its Rajasthan fields as the government is delaying approval for plans to raise output by 20 per cent ostensibly because of its standoff with the company's majority shareholder. Cairn India produces 125,000 barrels of crude oil per day (6.25 million tons a year) from Mangala oilfield, the largest among the 15 discoveries in the Rajasthan block RJ-ON-90/1. The company nearly four months ago had told the oil ministry and sector regulator Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) that output from the Mangala field can be raised to 150,000 bpd (7.5 million tons) without any new investment from existing facilities, sources in know of the development said.
But the plan has not been approved either by state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) which holds 30 per cent interest in the Thar dessert fields, or the DGH, sources said, adding the oil ministry too is sitting on the proposal. India meets 73 per cent of its oil needs through imports not producing 1.25 million tons of crude oil does not agur well for the country's energy security, experts said. Sources said Cairn India has completed drilling 74 wells but is producing oil from only 48 wells. The facilities at the Mangala field can sustain output of 150,000 bpd output. UK's Cairn Energy Plc, which holds 62.38 per cent stake in Cairn India, had on August 16 announced sale of its 40-51 per cent stake in the company to London-listed Vedanta Resources for upto USD 8.48 billion.

Rajasthan's Kalbelia dance and songs got UNESCO recognition

Rajasthan's Kalbelia dance and songs is now in UNESCO’s representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This annual list of UNESCO emphasizes on endangered performing art forms, so that the artists might get global support in terms of financial assistance, training and good infrastructure to preserve them. Three Indian forms of performing arts, Mudiyettu, Chhau and Kalbelia, have found pride of place in the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The annual list of UNESCO focuses on performing arts, which are outstanding but need support to sustain further.
The Kalbelia dance is performed by the snake charmers of Rajasthan, which has also failed to find patrons from within the country, as a result of which not many people take it up as a profession. The Chhau dance form is done with the help of crafted masks and mock combat movements. This dance form is popular in the Indian states of Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal. It was only after a survey conducted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi that it was found that these precious art forms were dying a slow death in absence of any financial support.
After their inclusion in the UNESCO list, it has become mandatory for all the 132 countries supporting UN to ensure that legal and financial measures are taken to restore these performing arts back to their honorable status. UNESCO would also ensure international cooperation and support in the form of studies, experts, training and infrastructure-creation UNESCO got 54 nominations this year for the Representative list. All the three nominations from India were recommended by UNESCO. The Inter governmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible cultural Heritage of UNESCO, in its 5th session in Nairobi has accepted these three recommendations.
