RSS leader Indresh Kumar appears before CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Indresh Kumar in connection with the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case. Kumar, who appeared before the CBI at its office here, alleged that he was being framed in the case and pleaded innocence. “I am sure I will be fully proved innocent,” he said before walking into the CBO office. Nine people were killed in the blast in 2007. Five others were killed in police firing following the blast.
Alleging that it was a ‘political conspiracy by the Congress party’, Kumar said, “I am not aware why they have called me. As a law abiding citizen I have come here to answer whatever question they have.” “I am innocent. I have full faith in the judiciary and the people of my country,” he added. Kumar’s name had appeared in the 2007 Ajmer blast, but he was not among the accused. The charge-sheet had said that Kumar had presided over a secret meeting between the key conspirators in Jaipur. Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, who is an accused in the Malegaon blast case, was also present in the meeting. Swami Aseemanand and Sunil Joshi, who was murdered in 2007, were the brains behind the Ajmer blast, the charge-sheet had stated. Three persons were killed in the 2007 Ajmer blast.

ND Tiwari to undergo DNA test

Rejecting veteran Congress leader N D Tiwari's plea, the Delhi High Court today directed him to undergo a DNA test to ascertain the veracity of a young man's claim that he is his biological son. Justice S Ravindra Bhat said, "There is imminent need for him to give blood sample to conduct the scientific test." The court turned down the 85-year-old former Andhra Pradesh Governor's plea that he cannot be forced to undergo the DNA test, saying it is the right of a child to know his or her biological father.
In his petition, 31-year-old Shekhar had demanded that Tiwari should be made to undergo a DNA test and publicly apologise and declare him as his son. Tiwari has consistently denied having had any physical relationship with Rohit's mother Ujjwal Shekhar and said this was an effort to malign him.

Rajasthan Jat Mahasabha issue statement on Bainsla's Remark

Rajasthan Jat Mahasabha issue statement on Bainsla's Remark. Gujjar agitation leader Kirori Singh Bainsla’s recent remark could leads to Jat- Gujjar Clash in Rajasthan. Yesterday Bainsla told reporter that “The government should make up the 5% quota demanded by Gujjars by drawing 4% from the OBC category,”. Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla’s statement that his community’s quota demand be met by digging out 4% from the OBC’s 21% quota has irked the Jats, who are a major beneficiary of the reservation under this category. Soon after the Rajasthan high court extended the stay on 5% quota for Gujjars and three other communities for a year on Wednesday, Bainsla demanded that the state government should pull out the share of Gujjars—which he thinks is 4%—from the OBC and club it with the 1% quota given to the community as special backward class (SBC) in May this year.
The news travelled like wildfire from the Raseri rail tracks near Bayana and within hours the Rajasthan Jat Mahasabha issued a statement at Jaipur strongly objecting to Bainsla’s demand. “We will not allow division of the OBC quota at any cost. Gujjars are just 3% and they cannot be allowed to hold the 97% population of the state at ransom,” the Mahasabha’s president Raja Ram Meel reacted. Unmoved by Meel’s reaction, Bainsla launched another attack on the Jats by questioning the manner in which the latter community was included in the OBC category. As unconfirmed news travelled Raseri that the high court has denied the Gujjars even the 1% quota recently granted to them under the SBC category, Bainsla demanded to know, “Why these commissions and committees are mentioned only when Gujjars demand reservation; under which commission or committee report were the Jats given reservation?”

Gujjar Agitation: RSRTC, Rail services badly hit in Rajasthan

There were long queues at enquiry counters at the Jaipur railway station on Tuesday as passengers looked confused and anxious about the position of their trains. On the second day of the protest, more than 30 trains were diverted as the Gurjars were sitting on the tracks near Bayana. Now the Gurjars in Bhilwara are also planning to stop trains in the place on December 25. Gurjars in Ajmer are also planning to step up their agitation. The agitation could affect the rail and road traffic in these areas.
On Tuesday, three routes of the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) including Dausa-Mahavirji, Bayana-Karauli and Bayana-Hindaun remained affected as no bus was allowed to move on these routes. RSRTC managing director Manjit Singh said, "The buses on other routes of the state are plying normally." Besides, the Central West Railway (CWR) have cancelled trains including Janshatabdi Express and Jamuna Bridge Express as the Bharatpur-Sawai Madhopur section remained affected because of Gurjar agitation, sources said.

Gujjar agitation: Additional force deployed in Rajasthan

The Home Ministry today dispatched 1,500 personnel of central paramilitary forces to Rajasthan to assist the State government to deal with the situation arising out of the ongoing Gujjar agitation. The central forces will be deployed along with Rajasthan Police personnel to maintain law and order and foil any attempt by any one to disturb peace, sources said. Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai also spoke to Rajasthan Chief Secretary Salauddin Ahmed and discussed with him the prevailing situation in the State and assured him all central help to maintaining normalcy.
Rail and road traffic remained affected as the agitators continued to squat on rail tracks and blocked roads in Bharatpur district. Gujjars have been agitating for the last two days in support of their demands, including quota in jobs. The Ashok Gehlot government has said it was ready for talks to end the impasse.

Gujjar to raise protest to higher level

Gujjars have stepped up their agitation and plan to choke major rail and road links a day after the Rajasthan High Court kept on hold the state government's Reservation Act giving five per cent extra quota for Gujjars in government jobs and educational institutes. Angry Gujjars are sitting on railway tracks, leading to the diversion of nearly 40 trains. Protesters are threatening to block major highways in eastern Rajasthan. They have called for a bandh on Friday in Dausa and Ajmer district. The administration is taking no chances. Paramilitary forces have been summoned to handle the situation. "All the rail tracks and highways will be blocked all over the state soon and we are also asking Gujjars in Delhi to stop milk supply in support of our demands," he added.

Gujjar Reservation decision - Rajastha HC deny special reservation

In a setback to agitating Gujjars, the Rajasthan High Court today held that members of the community could not be given special reservation in government jobs. A division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Mahesh Bhagwati held that Gujjars cannot be given special reservation and an act of 2008 has no substratum of quantifiable data that could justify the reservation. The move to provide reservation by government could not, therefore, be acted upon, the judges said.
The court also directed the state government to carry out an exercise within a year to establish the backwardness of Gujjars, Raikas, Raibari and Gadiya Lohar communities in the fields of education and government employment. Gujjars have been agitating for the last two days in support of their demands, including quota in jobs. The Ashok Gehlot government has said it is ready for talks to end the impasse. The High Court had earlier stayed the quota as it was exceeding the 50 per cent limit. Rail and road traffic was disrupted in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district due to the Gujjar stir. The agitation which began in 2007 has claimed over 70 lives so far. A year ago, Gujjars in Rajasthan fought police and members of another caste that already qualified for job reservations. After the protests, the State government said it would spend Rs 2.8 billion on improving schools, clinics, roads and other infrastructure in Gujjar areas. But Gujjars rejected this option.

The Gujjars agitators also held demonstration outside the RPSC head quarters in Ajmer and blocked Bayana-Hindon Road in Karauli district. CM Ashok Gehlot and home minister Shanti Dhariwal’s statements that the state government won’t put the announced recruitments on hold, as demanded by the Gujjars, too prompted the community leaders to declare an intensification of the agitation. “We will block national highways 11, 8 and 3 until the government stops the recruitment drive,’’ Bainsla’s close aide Har Prasad said. Railways Train No changed to 5 digit from 4

Indian Railways on Monday "smoothly" migrated to a five digit number scheme to monitor movement of passenger trains more effectively and facilitate management of train information scientifically for public convenience. "The migration went of smoothly as the date upgradation was carried out in the systems overnight to cause least inconvenience to passengers," said a Railway Ministry official. The pan-India 139 rail enquiry system has also added a new number '7' in the system to enable passengers find the new train numbers. The migration to five digit number had also become necessary as the four digit numbering scheme had got exhausted with the Indian Railways running more than 10,000 trains every day, the official said.
To make the transition smooth and simple, only a prefix of the digit 1 (one) has been added to the four-digit numbers of the existing trains. They include all scheduled and regular express or mail and superfast trains including the Durontos, Yuva Trains, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Garibrath and Sampark Kranti Express trains. For example, under the new scheme, the number of Kolkata Rajdhani from now on would be 12302 and 12952 for Mumbai Rajdhani.

Hero Honda split, its Now Hero and Honda

The two partners in Hero Honda Ltd have finally decided to ride off on their own in different directions. Their journey in the next few years will be closely watched as it could have a profound effect on the booming market for two wheelers, say industry experts. The Hero Honda board met on Wednesday to give its stamp of approval on a deal to end a 26-year-old partnership that began when India was tentatively opening its doors to multinational investment and a growing middle class was coming into its own. “This is the most important announcement I have made in the last 25 years,” said Pawan Munjal, Hero Honda’s managing director and chief executive officer.
The Munjals of the Hero group will buy out the 26% stake held by Honda Motor Co. Ltd for an undisclosed amount, in a deal that will likely be funded by debt. The purchase will be done in a “phased manner” in 2011 through two or more promoters, said senior Hero Honda officials. Financiers said this is an indication that the Munjals would first raise a bridge loan, and then go in for a term loan or bring in private equity firms at a later stage. Hero Honda proved to be one of the most successful of a bunch of similar collaborations between Indian and Japanese automobile companies in the early 1980s, though the separation seemed to be on the cards ever since Honda set up a wholly owned unit, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Ltd, in 1999. It was the only one of three Honda joint ventures in India that endured a testimony to the success of the venture. The two companies will face unique challenges in the years ahead as they rebuild their strategies.

WikiLeaks: Rahul Gandhi warned US of Hindu extremist threat

Rahul Gandhi, the "crown prince" of Indian politics, told the American ambassador last year that Hindu extremist groups could pose a greater threat to his country than Muslim militants. In comments likely to cause a storm in India, Gandhi, who is considered a likely prime ministerial candidate, warned Timothy Roemer that though "there was evidence of some support for [Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba] among certain elements in India's indigenous Muslim community, the bigger threat may be the growth of radicalised Hindu groups, which create religious tensions and political confrontations with the Muslim community".
The 40-year-old son of the Congress party president, Sonia Gandhi, said that "the risk of a 'home-grown' extremist front, reacting to terror attacks coming from Pakistan or from Islamist groups in India, was a growing concern and one that demanded constant attention". His words were revealed in one of 4,000 leaked U.S. diplomatic cables sent from Delhi. The cables reveal a difficult but increasingly warm relationship between a prickly emerging power and a superpower keen to be friends but on its own terms.

Ayodhya verdict: Sunni Waqf board to move Supreme Court

The Sunni Wakf Board today moved the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits, contending that the judgement is based on faith and not on evidence. The Board submitted in the appeal that the judgement dividing the 2.77 acres of disputed land into three parts among Muslims, Hindus and Nirmohi Akhara is not acceptable to it. “We have challenged the verdict of the High Court on the ground that the High Court has committed an error in holding that the building was at the place of birth of Ram,” the Board said in its petition.
The title dispute on Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid structure has already reached the Supreme Court with Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) challenging the Allahabad High Court’s verdict and Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha filing a caveat to pre-empt any ex-parte order on the Ayodhya title dispute. Challenging the verdict of the High Court’s Lucknow bench, the JUH too had submitted in the appeal that the judgement is based on faith and not on evidence. “It is humbly submitted that the mosque was illegally demolished. However, the ruins still exist. The foundation of the mosque is still intact. Title would not extinguish by demolishing the mosque. “Therefore, it was incumbent on the court to uphold the rule of law and not to validate an illegal act,” the appeal filed by Anis Suhrawady of JuH had said.

Parliament adjourns, winter end in 2G Scam Fog

The winter session of Parliament on Monday ended without transacting any substantial business, going down in Parliamentary history as the only session virtually washed out due to standoff between the government and Opposition over 2G spectrum scam. Parliament could function barely for a few hours during the 23 sittings which began on 9th November, as the united Opposition forced adjournments almost everyday, within minutes of assembling. Opposition members trooping into the well and shouting slogans demanding JPC probe into the 2G spectrum allocation became a daily routine in both Houses. Normalcy was seen in the Lok Sabha only on the first day of the session when the Rajya Sabha was adjourned because of death of a sitting member Despite a number of meetings between the government and Opposition, the impasse continued as the BJP-led NDA, the Left parties, AIADMK, SP, TDP and BJD persisted with their demand for a JPC into the 2G spectrum scam.
The Opposition got a shot in the arm after the CAG report, tabled in Parliament on 16th November, said the spectrum allocation in 2008 had caused a presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer. The Opposition was not satisfied even though Telecom Minister A Raja quit. The government, on the other hand, continuously rejected the demand for JPC maintaining that the Public Accounts Committee was adequately equipped to probe the irregularities. This session earned the dubious distinction of being virtually washed out, although Parliament had witnessed logjam for 17 days over Tehelka scam in 2001 and disruptions for 45 days over Bofors scandal in 1987. Before adjourning the Upper House sine die, Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari conveyed his displeasure stating the 221st session displayed "distinct" features and asked members to introspect. "No debates or discussions on matters of public interest took place; no special mentions were made or laid on the table; no zero hour interventions were sought; no questions were answered orally and no supplementary questions were raised," he said.

2 Years of Congress in Rajasthan, BJP says total failure

The opposition BJP and CPI (M) today dubbed the two year rule of Ashok Gehlot led Congress government in Rajasthan as "total failure on all fronts", even as the government praised itself on the eve of completing two years in office. "The government took important decisions in the interest of farmers, for strengthening rural development and Panchayat Raj, attracting investment, and simplifying the process of promoting investment, social security and power generation," a government spokesperson said today. The government claimed that it has created a "new Rajasthan" by bringing development in all the sectors. "Increase in power generation, release of water policy for better water management, water supply in drought affected 21,000 villages through tankers, renewable and repairing of several thousands km roads, setting up of 1800 citizen centers are among some of our achievements," he said.
On the other hand, the opposition termed the state government's two years in office as total failure on all fronts. "Gehlot government is not bothered for the law and order situation, developmental works, progress in education sector but is just involved in rampant corruption. Crime has considerably increased in the Congress regime and this is the fact state Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal acknowledged in SPs conference," deputy leader of opposition in the state legislative assembly, Ghanshyam Tiwari said.

Rajasthan Gujjars hold Mahapanchayat in Karauli

The All India Gujjar Reservation Action Committee today held a congregation (Mahapanchayat) at Garhmora in Karauli district, the Gujjar dominated pocket in Rajasthan. However, no decision could be taken on revival of the stir for pressing upon its six-point demand charter which includes the demand of five per cent special reservation to Gujjars and three other most backward castes(MBC).
The decision on the future course of action would be taken at another meet at the same place on December 18, Action Committee President and former Delhi MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said. ''We neither want confrontation with the Government nor violence in the agitation but I want to convey to the Government that there is widespread resentment among people over delay in acceptance to their demands,'' Mr Bidhuri said.

Saina Nehwal wins Hong Kong Open title

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal rallied to register a scintilliating three-game victory over Shixian Wang of China to clinch her third Super Series title of the year at the Hong Kong Open in Wanchai on Sunday. The 20-year-old Indian capped her career's fourth Super Series title triumph with a 15-21 21-16 21-17 win over the 3rd seed Chinese in a gruelling one hour and 11 minutes summit clash at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. The girl from Hyderabad won back-to-back titles -- Indian Open Grand Prix, Singapore Open Super Series and defended the Indonesian Super Series -- before clinching the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in October here.
Saina, who dropped to fourth in the world rankings, is likely to inch closer to the number one spot with this resounding victory. Saina played a tactical game after she lost the first game and clawed her way back with some fast-paced rallies and powerful smashes to outwit the Chinese world number 5. In the second game, Saina jumped to 11-5 from 5-5 but Shixian narrowed the gap to 11-10 before the gutsy Indian surged ahead to 19-11 by registering seven straight points. But Saina missed a couple of points on the baseline and nets to allow Shixian close the gap to 19-16. But with the Chinese hitting the shuttle out, Saina was back into the match.
