Australia win 4th Test by 298 runs to complete 4-0 whitewash

Australia managed to claim the four remaining Indian wickets in little over an hour to enforce a mammoth 298 run win and inflict a 4-0 whitewash on India, on Saturday. This is India's 8th overseas loss in raw. Indian captain MS Dhoni praised Australia's ability to rise to occasion when a match was there to be won. "Australia played consistent cricket which was very important," he said. "Whenever a partnership was needed a few of their batsmen stood up. When it was needed from their bowlers to bowl consistently in one area that's what they did. "They always stepped up when needed." Clarke, who said he was driven by his promise to lead from the front, led the series Australian runscorers ahead of fellow veterans Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey. "It's nice for the senior players to be scoring a lot of runs," he said.
Hence, after yet another shambolic display with the bat that saw them put up their 7th score below 300 in 8 innings, the Indian cricket team did nothing to redress the imminent clean sweep of the series, which is now the second in as many series abroad. They were comprehensively beaten in all departments of the game and with some aged Indian batting greats all set to bid goodbye to their illustrious careers in the near future, the team has got its task cut out to rebuild with some promising young players in the future.

NASA discovers 11 New Solar system, 26 Planets

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on Friday that its Kepler telescope has discovered 11 new planetary systems that include 26 confirmed alien planets. The new planets vary in size from one-and-a-half times the radius of Earth to bigger than Jupiter. Their orbital periods range from six to 143 days, and they all orbit closer to their stars than Venus does to our sun. The discoveries nearly double the number of alien worlds — or “exoplanets” planets — found by Kepler outside our solar system and help astronomers better understand how planets form. However, scientists still have to determine the make-up of the planets, such as whether their surfaces are rocky or gaseous. “Prior to the Kepler mission, we knew of perhaps 500 exoplanets across the whole sky,” Doug Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said in a statement. “Now, in just two years staring at a patch of sky not much bigger than your fist, Kepler has discovered more than 60 planets and more than 2,300 planet candidates. This tells us that our galaxy is positively loaded with planets of all sizes and orbits.”
Kepler is NASA's first mission in search of Earth-like planets orbiting stars similar to our Sun. It launched in March 2009, equipped with the largest camera ever sent into space -- a 95-megapixel array of charge-coupled devices -- and is expected to continue its science operations until at least November 2012. In December last year, NASA announced Kepler had confirmed its first-ever planet in a habitable zone outside our solar system, Kepler 22b, though it remained unclear whether the surface was rocky or gaseous. Such planets have the right distance from their star to support water, plus a suitable temperature and atmosphere to support life. Spinning around its star some 600 light years away, Kepler 22b is 2.4 times the size of the Earth and orbits its Sun-like star every 290 days.

Rajasthan wins Ranji Trophy 2011-12

Rajasthan wins Ranji Trophy 2011-12 for consecutive second year. The match was drawn but Rajasthan lift the 2011-12 Ranji Trophy on the basis of first innings lead. Rajasthan completed formalities on the fifth and final day to successfully defend the Ranji Trophy by virtue of the first-innings lead against Tamil Nadu, at the Chepauk, in Chennai, on Monday. The match was dead as a contest on the fourth day itself, when Rajasthan gained a huge 326-run first innings lead. Rajasthan walked away with a winners' cheque of Rs 2 crore, while Tamil Nadu got half that amount. The man who played a huge hand in turning a bunch of also-rans into a gutsy domestic outfit is undoubtedly captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar. With back-to-back domestic titles under his belt, Kanitkar will now certainly be remembered as one of the finest domestic captains in recent times.
Rajasthan, who won the title last year after qualifying from the Plate Division, were considered underdogs all through this year and needed to win two out right games in the league stages to make the knock-outs. Man of the match Vineet Saxena said that his double century couldn't have come at a better time than in the finals. "Full credit to Tamil Nadu bowlers as they didn't give away any easy runs. We had a good opening partnership. Our plan was to stay at the wicket and bat as long as possible. We knew that if we can bat long enough, it will be an advantage when we are bowling second. This has been my best season and this knock was a special one as I got it in the finals."
Score Summary:
Rajasthan (1st innings) 621 in 245 overs
Vineet Saxena 257
Aakash Chopra 94
Hrishikesh Kanitkar 67
Robin Bist 57
RR Parida 40
Rituraj Singh 45
Aushik Srinivas 4/192
Tamil Nadu (1st innings) 295 in 102.4 overs
Dinesh Karthik 150
R Prasanna 44
Rituraj Singh 4/76
Rajasthan (2nd innings) 204/5 declared
Robin Bist 92
RR Parida 43*
Tamilnadu (2nd innings) 8/2 in 13 overs

Rajasthan all set to win Ranji Trophy title

Defending champion Rajasthan are all set to retain the Ranji Trophy 2011-12 after ensuring a huge lead against hosts Tamil Nadu at stumps, on the fourth day of the final on Sunday. Replying to Rajasthan's mammoth first innings score of 621, Tamil Nadu, who began the day at 66 for three, buckled under pressure with Dinesh Karthik playing a lone hand while scoring a valiant 150. Not opting to enforce the follow-on, Rajasthan batted a second time and were 21 for no loss at stumps and would have kept the champagne in the ice bucket ahead of the celebrations today when the five-day game concludes. Despite the spotlight on the pitch that came in for some heavy criticism for its lack of pace and low bounce, the Rajasthan bowlers did a fine job to restrict Tamil Nadu whose line-up included five players with international experience, but, barring Karthik, flopped miserably. For Rajasthan, the seamers did the bulk of damage. Rituraj Singh picked up four for 76 while fellow-new ball bowler Pankaj Singh returned 2 for 58 and Sumit Mathur 2 for 53.
Bist opened up after a slow passage, collecting four boundaries in the space of 24 deliveries to move to 43. His half-century duly came before the lunch interval, off 107 balls with a drive past mid-off for four. When he clipped Kaushik for a single to move to 59, Bist became the first Rajasthan batsman to aggregate 1,000 runs in a Ranji season. The previous was Hanumant Singh's 869 runs in 1966-67. So all rajasthani Must be ready to Celebrate Ranji Tropy wins for consecutive second year.

Rajasthan Police lied, tweets angry Salman Rushdie

British author Salman Rushdie Sunday accused the Rajasthan Police of concocting a supposed death threat to keep him away from the Jaipur Literature Festival. The police have refused to comment. "I`ve investigated, and believe I was indeed lied to. I am outraged and very angry," Rushdie posted on micro blogging site Twitter. He said he did not know who gave the orders to police to come up with the lie. "Don`t know... Yes, I guess the same police who want to arrest Hari, Amitava, Jeet and Ruchir. Disgusting," wrote the controversial writer of Indian origin. Authors Hari Kunzru, Amitava Kumar, Jeet Thayil and Ruchir Joshi read passages from "The Satanic Verses" on the first day of the festival, after Rushdie pulled out of the event citing threats to him. Rajasthan Police have sought a copy of the video from the organisers of the festival of the session hosting Kunzru and Kumar in which the two read excerpts from the book, a police source said.
Rushdie appeared at the festival without incident in 2007 but this year Muslim activists lobbied for him to be banned, raising fears of angry protests and security problems at the scenic venue in the gardens of an old palace. Among more than 250 speakers at the five-day event were US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, biologist and atheist author Richard Dawkins and Indian best-selling novelist Chetan Bhagat. When Rushdie announced on Friday that he would not attend the festival, he said he had doubts about the accuracy of the intelligence reports but it would be "irresponsible" to ignore them.

Ranji Trophy final: Rajasthan's Saxena hits double hundred

Rajasthan made a challenging score of 404/2 in Ranji Trophy final match on day 2 played at Played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai with Opener Vineet Saxena scored one of the slowest double hundreds in recent times with unbeaten 207* against Tamil Nadu by stumps on friday. After scoring 221 without loss on the first day, Rajasthan's batsmen did not display any positive intent to up the ante as they added only 183 runs in the 90 overs sent down. Saxena, who became the second Rajasthan batsman after Hanumant Singh to score a double century in the final, was unbeaten on 207. But he has already consumed a whopping 555 balls during which he hit 25 boundaries and a six.
The slow approach of Rajasthan's batsmen, however, raised doubts whether their bowlers will get enough time to take 10 Tamil Nadu wickets on such an unresponsive pitch. In case Tamil Nadu bats more than 30 overs and their innings is not completed then result will be decided on run-rate. For example, Rajasthan, till now, have scored their runs from 180 overs at a rate of 2.24. If Tamil Nadu bats more than 30 overs and their innings is not completed, they will need to score runs ,at an asking rate of 2.25.
Score Summary:
Rajasthan 1st innings 404/2 (180.0 Overs)
A Chopra 94 ( 307 Balls)
V Saxena batting 207 * (555 Balls)
Kanitkar 67 (146 balls)

Supreme Court dismisses PIL on Army Chief's age row

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a PIL seeking a direction to the government to restore the Army Chief Gen V K Singh's date of birth as May 10, 1951 saying it was not maintainable in law. "In our view, the writ petition filed at the behest of an association is not maintainable. The writ petition is dismissed as not maintainable," a bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia said. "This is purely a service matter," the court said, adding it is not expressing any opinion on the merits of the case. The bench was furious that the PIL filed by The Grenadiers Association (Rohtak Chapter) annexed the opinions of former chief justices of India in the petition on the age row of Army Chief when they themselves said it is not for being putting up before the court. He directed the apex court registry not to accept any writ petitions in cases where opinions of former chief justices are annexed.
Gen Singh himself has filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the government that his date of birth be treated as 10.5.1951 and not 1950. The bench, also comprising justices A K Patnaik and Swatantra Kumar, said the affected person was not before it and entertaining a PIL based on newspaper headlines will set a "bad precedence" and lead to a "chaotic situation". The apex court said it would also not be appropriate for it to express any opinion on the case as the "aggrieved person" is already before it by way of a writ petition. At the outset, the bench wanted to know from senior advocate Bhim Singh, who was appearing for the association, as to how the PIL was maintainable and why opinion of the former CJIs were annexed in the petition.  "We are not concerned with the opinions of the former CJIs. It is most improper and it is most unfortunate. We will not consider the opinion of former CJIs," the bench said and pointed out to Singh that the former CJIs themselves have said that the opinions are not to be put in court. "We are not here to fix the age of Army Chief. This is purely a service matter. Why you are putting opinion of former CJIs in the court? Why should the opinion be annexed in the petition? We are on the very limited issue," the bench said. "You are only for the association. Is it not that the date of birth is a service matter," the bench said while referring to some of the apex court judgements. The bench did not agree with petitioner's contention that the whole nation was concerned with the age row of the Army Chief.

Rushdie not to visit Jaipur Literature Festival

Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie will not be in India on to participate the Jaipur Literature festival on 20th January due to a change in his schedule. Rushdie was scheduled to attend Jaipur Literature Festival beginning this week. The organizers of the festival reportedly ask Salman Rushdie to call off his visit. Muslim organizations have warned of protests in Jaipur if Rushdie is allowed to enter the city to attend the Literature Festival. As questions over author Salman Rushdie's proposed visit to India continue to linger, organizers of the Jaipur Literature festival confirm that the author will not be attending the literary festival on the 20th as scheduled. This even as the centre and state continue to pass the buck over the award winning author's visit.
Earlier Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday met Home Minister P Chidambaram over Rushdie’s proposed visit, setting the stage for a confrontation with the organisers of the Jaipur Literature Festival and artists. Gehlot’s move has also invited criticism from a cross section of writers and artists. Gehlot is understood to have expressed security concerns over the controversial writer’s visit to the four-day festival. “I do not have any official information about whether Rushdie is coming or not. There is no official communication to us. There is, however, a reaction among the locals. They do not want Salman Rushdie to visit Jaipur,” Gehlot said after the meeting. Gehlot also said no one could stop Rushdie from coming to the country as he enjoyed PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) status. “But as far as his visit to Jaipur is concerned, the Government would take a decision keeping in view the law and order problem in the State on this issue,” he said. Rushdie was earlier scheduled to speak on January 20, and 21, at different sessions at the literature festival. The author had incurred the wrath of Muslims worldwide due to the alleged blasphemous content in his novel The Satanic Verses which was published in 1988.

Maderna, 59, was sacked from the Ashok Gehlot Cabinet on October 16 after his name cropped up in the abduction and murder case of the nurse. Both Bishnoi and Maderna are in jail for past the one month. Jakhar could not be contacted for his comments.
