Rajasthan on Monday sought a special status in terms of education in view of the desert State’s difficult geography and called upon the Centre to sanction additional funds for opening model schools on the lines of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in 186 panchayat samitis across the State. Addressing the 56th meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education in New Delhi, State Education Minister Bhanwarlal Meghwal said the Centre should also provide additional funds to Rajasthan for maintaining the balance between the number of students and teachers under the new legislation for right to education. State Higher Education Minister Jitendra Singh, Technical Education Minister Mahendrajit Singh Malviya and senior officers also attended the meeting, which was presided over by Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal.
The Minister said there should be an additional financial provision in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for constructing rooms in primary schools to provide kindergarten facilities to children before they were formally admitted to the first standard. He said about 81 lakh school children in the State were benefiting from the mid-day meal scheme. Mr. Meghwal said a financial provision should be made in the 10th Finance Commission and the Girls’ Education Foundation for running the 31 girls’ hostels at the district headquarters and constructing new hostels at 186 panchayat samitis.
