Wikipedia's Campus Ambassador Program in India

Wikipedia is starting its Campus Ambassador Program in India and plans to commence a large-scale, pilot in Pune covering all colleges and universities in the region, starting May 2011. This program is part of Wikimedia’s Public Policy initiative project through which, it intends to make universities, a part of Wikipedia and improve the quality of content. Students, college faculty and staff members or anyone geographically close to a college or university in Pune can enroll for the program. Those outside Pune can also apply and attend training sessions conducted by Wikimedia Foundation, however there are no plans to extend the Pilot to other regions before September 2011.
Wikipedia campus ambassadors volunteer to train and recruit editors to write for Wikipedia by way of on-campus activities and face to face training programs, including classroom integration. They devote 3-5 hours in a week, for a semester, train and mentor students on Wikipedia editing, and conduct workshops & presentations. The ambassadors do not get paid, however, Wkipedia provides training material, merchandise and stipends for running events in addition to sponsorships to Wikimedia events. The program was first launched in the United States in 2010, with Harvard University, Georgetown University, Indiana University, and UC Berkeley among others.
