Asaram bapu booked for raping minor at Jodhpur ashram

Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu was on Tuesday booked by the Delhi Police for allegedly raping a minor girl of Jodhpur. The complainant - a teen from the Rajasthan town - has accused the 72-year-old self-styled godman of sexually assaulting her at his ashram earlier this month. According to police sources, the girl told her parents, who were staunch supporters of the guru, about her ordeal on August 17 and they approached the police two days later. The police sent her to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital for medical examination when sexual assault on the girl was confirmed. The victim told police that the guru had called her in the name of a religious ceremony at his Jodhpur ashram, where he allegedly assaulted her sexually. Her parents were shocked to know that the man whom they revered raped their daughter, the police said.
Jodhpur police commissioner Biju George Joseph said, "We have registered the case against Asha Ram (sic) Bapu and handed over the investigation to a female police officer of ACP level." He said that the police has provided security to the girl, adding that they secured the ashram at Manai immediately after receiving the information on Wednesday. There have been many more cases registered against the controversial guru and his followers related to land encroachments in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, attempt to murder and even culpable homicide of young students in 2008. Asaram was in news few months ago for his controversial remark on the victim of Delhi's December 16, 2012 gangrape case. He had said the girl was equally guilty along with her rapists as she should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop.
