B L Sharma appointed Rajasthan University Vice-Chancellor(VC)

Governor Shivraj Patil on Sunday appointed 55-year-old Jodhpur-born and current vice-chancellor (V-C) of Bhavnagar University (Gujarat), Dr B L Sharma, as full-time V-C of the Rajasthan University (RU) for three years. Sharma's appointment has ended speculations doing the round ever since the search committee had sent a list of five candidates to Raj Bhawan for the coveted job over a fortnight ago. Vice Chancellor of Bhavnagar University in Gujarat, B.L. Sharma was appointed as the vice Chancellor of Rajasthan University by the acting governor of the state, Shivraj Patil on Sunday. 55 year old Prof. Sharma had earlier been the head of the Human Rights Law Department in the Law Faculty at Saurashtra University, Rajkot. He had also served as the Viec Chancellor of Bhavnagar University in Gujarat since July, 2009.
The RU staff has persistently demanded a V-C from Rajasthan only. Even while search committee was on a lookout for a "suitable" candidate, RU staff persisted with its demand and made it resonating enough, playing a role in selection of the five final candidates. Secretary, RU Teachers' Association (RUTA), Jayant Singh, expressed delight over Sharma's appointment. "We welcome the decision," he added. Singh clarified that it was not that they were hell bent on selection of someone from Rajasthan as V-C but they had pleaded that the state too has a rich pool of talent and they should also be considered for the top job.
